description Liberty Cap (Yosemite) Overview

Liberty Cap is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, California, located near Nevada Fall in the Merced River canyon. Its rounded form is a product of the glacial erosion that shaped many of Yosemite's granite landforms, while its position beside the waterfall makes it a recognizable feature of the park's landscape. Members of the Mariposa Battalion gave it the name Liberty Cap in 1851 because its profile resembled a Phrygian cap. The formation is of interest to hikers, climbers, and visitors studying Yosemite geology.
