Rhyncholestes raphanurus, the long-nosed caenolestid, is a living marsupial commonly grouped with the shrew-opossums. It is the sole species in the genus Rhyncholestes and was described from southern Chile in 1924. The animal is identified by its elongated snout and belongs to a South American marsupial lineage distinct from true shrews and opossums. The species is therefore both a geographic taxon from Chile and the sole representative of its genus.
