Machibuse, also released internationally as Ambush, is a 1970 Japanese jidaigeki film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Hiroshi Inagaki. The plot follows a wandering swordsman, portrayed by frequent collaborator Toshiro Mifune, who becomes entangled in a deadly standoff at a rural post town. The narrative builds tension through a claustrophobic convergence of rival hired killers, allowing Mifune to showcase the imposing, rugged ronin archetype for which he was widely known.
