Macromia taeniolata

Macromia taeniolata is commonly known as the royal river cruiser. It belongs to the family Macromiidae, which consists of large dragonflies known as cruisers. The name reflects its behavior of continuously flying long distances along waterways.

This species is native to eastern North America, commonly found near large rivers and streams. Its range extends from the northeastern United States down through Florida and west to Texas. They are most active during the warm summer months.

It is a large, distinctively marked dragonfly with a brownish-black body and bright yellow abdominal markings. Unlike some dragonflies, its eyes do not meet on the top of its head. The royal river cruiser also features brilliant emerald-green eyes.

The royal river cruiser primarily inhabits large, clear rivers and their adjacent banks. They spend a significant amount of time patrolling the water's surface for prey. Males can often be seen flying continuously back and forth along the river corridor.
