Mary Kingsley was a British writer and traveler who undertook extensive journeys in West and Central Africa during the 1890s. She traveled through areas of present-day Gabon and Cameroon, collected fish specimens for scientific study, and climbed Mount Cameroon. Her books, including “Travels in West Africa,” combined observations of geography and natural history with accounts of African societies and criticism of some European missionary and colonial assumptions.
