Max Black (1909–1988) was a British-American analytic philosopher who spent much of his academic career at Cornell University. He made significant contributions to the philosophy of language, the philosophy of science, and the study of logical positivism. Black is perhaps best known for his work on the philosophy of mathematics and his influential "interaction theory" of metaphor, which analyzed how metaphors generate new meaning.
