Rudolf Carnap

Carnap was one of the central philosophers of the Vienna Circle, alongside figures such as Moritz Schlick and Otto Neurath. The group promoted logical analysis, scientific unity, and strong criticism of traditional metaphysics.

Carnap argued that many metaphysical sentences fail to express testable claims or valid logical relations, even when they appear grammatically meaningful. His essay on overcoming metaphysics famously attacks uses of language that cannot be connected to evidence or formal rules.

In the 1928 work often called the Aufbau, Carnap attempts to show how scientific concepts could be systematically constructed from a carefully chosen basic vocabulary. The book is an ambitious exercise in logical reconstruction rather than a conventional scientific encyclopedia.

Carnap emphasized logical analysis, confirmation, and the construction of precise scientific languages. Popper instead made falsifiability central to distinguishing empirical science, and he criticized inductive approaches associated with logical empiricism.
