What is the Meiji Guyot?
The Meiji Guyot is an underwater volcanic seamount located in the northwest Pacific Ocean. It is recognized as the oldest known seamount in the Emperor-Hawaiian volcanic chain.
How old is the Meiji Guyot?
The Meiji Guyot was formed approximately 82 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. It was created as the Pacific plate moved over a stationary volcanic hotspot.
How was the Meiji Guyot formed?
Like the rest of the Hawaiian chain, it was formed by volcanic eruptions caused by a stationary mantle plume, or hotspot, beneath the Pacific tectonic plate. As the plate moved northwest, the volcano went extinct and eventually eroded below sea level.
Where is the Meiji Guyot located?
The Meiji Guyot is located at the very northernmost end of the Emperor seamount chain, near the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. It is currently subducting into the trench, meaning it will eventually be completely destroyed by the Earth's mantle.
