Mendut Temple

The temple is famous for housing three large, finely carved stone statues. The centerpiece is a 3-meter seated Buddha, which is flanked by the Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani. These statues are incredibly well-preserved and represent a rare, complete grouping of Mahayana Buddhist iconography.

Mendut Temple is positioned in a perfectly straight line with the massive Borobudur Temple and the smaller Pawon Temple in Central Java, Indonesia. This spatial alignment suggests the three sites formed a single, unified religious complex. Pilgrims traditionally travel between the three temples during the Waisak (Vesak) festival.

Mendut Temple is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument built during the Sailendra dynasty. It was rediscovered in 1836 as an overgrown ruin covered in vegetation. The Dutch colonial government undertook a massive restoration project to stabilize the structure in the early 20th century.

Unlike the step-pyramid structure of nearby Borobudur, Mendut is a single, large, tall building built on a rectangular base. It features a high roof and intricate relief carvings along its exterior walls. The interior is a dark, cavernous chamber designed specifically to house the massive Buddha statues.
