Midès Oasis

Midès is located in the Tamerza Governorate (part of Tozeur Governorate) in southwestern Tunisia, very close to the Algerian border. It sits at the edge of a deep canyon gorge in the Atlas foothills, about 60 kilometers from the city of Tozeur.

The old stone village was abandoned after catastrophic floods in 1969 destroyed much of the settlement and made the remaining structures unsafe. Residents relocated to newer housing nearby, leaving the dramatic ruins overlooking the canyon.

Yes, the site is accessible to visitors, and the dramatic gorge and crumbling stone buildings have become a minor tourist destination in southwestern Tunisia. The area is also known as a filming location for scenes in 'The English Patient' (1996), which used nearby desert landscapes.

Midès is part of a cluster of mountain oases that includes Tamerza, Chebika, and Mides, all within roughly 20–30 kilometers of each other in the hills above the Chott el-Jerid salt flat. They are typically visited together on day trips from Tozeur.
