description Moenjodaro Overview
Moenjodaro, also commonly spelled Mohenjo-daro, preserves one of the largest urban settlements of the Indus Valley Civilization in Sindh, Pakistan. The city developed around 2500 BCE and was largely abandoned by about 1900 BCE. Its organized street layout and extensive covered drains reveal a Bronze Age community that invested heavily in the practical infrastructure of urban life. Among its public structures, the Great Bath stands out as a large waterproofed brick pool.
Its exact use remains uncertain, which makes it important to distinguish the surviving structure from interpretations of its purpose. The site's appeal for readers interested in ancient cities lies in its planned neighborhoods and attention to drainage, rather than a record centered on named rulers. Moenjodaro offers substantial evidence of how an early city was built, while leaving many questions about its government and beliefs unresolved.
