Monte Perdido Massif

The Monte Perdido Massif is located in the Pyrenees mountains, specifically within the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park in the Aragon region of Spain. It sits right on the border between Spain and France. The area is one of the oldest national parks in Europe, established in 1918.

Monte Perdido, which translates to 'Lost Mountain,' stands at an elevation of 3,355 meters (11,007 feet), making it the highest limestone peak in the Pyrenees. It is the third-highest mountain in the entire Pyrenees range. Its massive scale dominates the skyline of the surrounding Ordesa Valley.

The most popular and relatively easiest route to the summit is via the normal route from the Goriz Refuge, which involves a long but non-technical hike up scree slopes. Another famous approach is through the Brecha de Roland, a massive natural gap in the sheer rock face. Despite being the easiest route, it is still a strenuous, high-altitude alpine climb.

Monte Perdido and its surrounding valleys are part of the Pyrénées – Mont Perdu UNESCO World Heritage site, which straddles the border of France and Spain. It is recognized globally for its exceptional geological features, including deep limestone canyons and soaring cirques. The area is also culturally significant for its historic transhumance farming practices.
