Olympus Massif

The highest peak in the Olympus Massif is Mytikas, which stands at exactly 2,917 meters (9,570 feet) above sea level. Mytikas translates to 'nose' in Greek and is the premier goal for mountaineers visiting the range. It is the highest point in all of Greece.

A standard ascent to the summit of Mount Olympus typically takes two to three days, requiring an overnight stay at a mountain refuge. Most climbers start from the town of Litochoro, hiking to the Spilios Agapitos refuge on the first day. The final push to the Mytikas summit involves exposed scrambling and mild rock climbing.

The Olympus Massif is located in northern Greece, specifically in the region of Thessaly and Macedonia. It lies directly on the coast of the Aegean Sea, separating the Greek mainland from the Pieria plain. The massif and its surrounding areas are protected as a designated National Park.

While the trails leading up to the refuges are standard hiking paths, reaching the absolute highest peak of Mytikas requires some basic scrambling. Climbers are highly advised to wear a helmet, and many choose to use a via ferrata kit or a short climbing rope for the final section. Hikers can alternatively climb the slightly lower peak of Skolio, which requires no technical gear.
