Moschophoros

The Moschophoros, also known as the Calf-Bearer, is an Archaic Greek marble statue depicting a bearded man carrying a calf across his shoulders. The animal's legs and the man's arms form a prominent crossed arrangement that locks the figures together. It was likely created as a votive offering to the goddess Athena.

The sculpture is generally dated to around 570 BCE, placing it firmly within the Greek Archaic period. It was created as a votive offering and later buried in the Perserschutt, or Persian debris, on the Acropolis. It survived the centuries largely because it was destroyed and buried during the Persian sack of Athens.

The marble statue was discovered on the Athenian Acropolis, where it had been buried following the Persian sack of the city. It was later uncovered by archaeologists exploring the ancient ruins of the sacred site. It is currently housed in the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

The statue exhibits the classic 'Archaic smile' and stylized hair typical of early Greek Kouros statues. Its blocky composition, where the man and calf share a unified silhouette, demonstrates the sculptural conventions of the era. The rigid frontal pose is also a hallmark of this period.
