Mosquitia Pine Savanna

The Mosquitia Pine Savanna is a vast ecoregion located along the Caribbean coast of eastern Honduras and extending into Nicaragua. It is recognized as Central America's largest pine savanna, characterized by expansive grasslands dotted with Caribbean pine trees.

The Mosquitia pine savanna is a highly fire-maintained ecosystem, relying on frequent natural and human-induced fires to survive. Without these regular fires, broadleaf trees and shrubs would quickly outcompete and replace the native Caribbean pines and native grasses.

The Mosquitia region is historically inhabited by the Indigenous Miskito people, who have adapted their traditional hunting and agricultural practices to the savanna environment. They share this ecosystem with other Indigenous groups, including the Pech, who rely heavily on the natural resources of the area.

The ecoregion provides crucial habitat for a variety of wildlife, including large mammals like jaguars, white-tailed deer, and Baird's tapirs. The grassy plains and scattered wetlands are also a major haven for bird species, including the endangered great green macaw and various migratory songbirds.
