description MS Costa Concordia Overview
MS Costa Concordia was a large Italian cruise ship operated by Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc. On January 13, 2012, the vessel struck an underwater rock formation while attempting a close-in sail-past maneuver near Isola del Giglio, Italy, tearing a gash in its hull and partially capsizing. The accident resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals. Captain Francesco Schettino was subsequently convicted by an Italian court of manslaughter, causing a maritime disaster, and abandoning his ship while passengers were still aboard.
