description Mughan Steppe Overview
The Mughan Steppe is a lowland steppe in southern Azerbaijan and adjoining northwestern Iran, within the Kura-Aras lowland near the lower courses of the Kura and Aras rivers. Its flat terrain, climate, and riverine setting give it a distinct steppe character, while irrigation and agriculture have altered parts of the natural landscape. The area has also been associated historically with the Shahsevan, a Turkic-speaking pastoral community whose seasonal movements and later forced sedentarization form part of the region’s social history. It is relevant to Caucasian geography, Iranian-Azerbaijani history, and lowland dryland studies.
