Murchison Falls

Murchison Falls is located within the Murchison Falls National Park in the northwestern part of Uganda. The waterfall is situated on the Victoria Nile, which flows out of Lake Victoria and eventually joins the Albert Nile. The national park is Uganda's largest and oldest conservation area.

What makes Murchison Falls unique is the sheer force of the water, which forces the entire Victoria Nile through a narrow gorge only 7 meters wide. After passing through this incredibly tight gap, the river plunges 43 meters down into a pool below, creating a spectacular plume of spray. This intense compression creates the most powerful natural water flow in the world.

Murchison Falls National Park is home to a massive variety of African wildlife, including the iconic "Big Five" (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinoceros). Visitors on game drives and boat safaris can also spot giraffes, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and numerous antelope species. The park is also famous for its diverse population of birds, including the rare shoebill stork.

The waterfall was named by the explorers John Hanning Speke and James Grant in 1863 after Roderick Murchison, who was then the president of the Royal Geographical Society. However, it is also known locally by its traditional name, Kabalega Falls, named after the revered 19th-century king of the Bunyoro Kingdom. The park itself also carries the official name.
