MV Bukoba was a Tanzanian passenger ferry operating on Lake Victoria between ports in Tanzania. It capsized near Mwanza on 21 May 1996 while carrying far more passengers than could be reliably accounted for, and roughly 800 people are estimated to have died. The disaster exposed the lethal consequences of overloading and inadequate passenger records, and it remains among the deadliest recorded maritime accidents on Lake Victoria.
