MV Rena

description MV Rena Overview

MV Rena was a container ship that grounded on the Astrolabe Reef, known in Maori as Otaiti, off New Zealand's Bay of Plenty in October 2011. The accident released fuel oil, containers, and cargo into the marine environment, contaminating beaches and killing wildlife. The wreck later broke apart, prompting extensive salvage, shoreline cleanup, environmental monitoring, and legal proceedings, and the incident became one of New Zealand's most consequential maritime pollution events.
