description Nadir Shah Overview
Nadir Shah was an Iranian military ruler who became shah in 1736 and founded the Afsharid dynasty. He restored Iranian power after the decline of the Safavids through campaigns against Afghan, Ottoman, Russian, Central Asian, and Mughal forces. His invasion of the Mughal Empire culminated in the capture and sack of Delhi in 1739, after which treasures including the Peacock Throne and Koh-i-Noor diamond were carried to Iran.
