Nazca Lines Cat

The massive feline Nazca Lines geoglyph was relatively recently discovered around 2020 during renovations of the natural viewpoint in the Nazca Desert. Erosion had previously obscured the 37-meter-long figure from clear view. Its discovery provided new insights into the earliest phases of Nazca earthworks.

Archaeologists estimate that the cat geoglyph dates back to around 200 BCE, making it one of the oldest figures on the Nazca plateau. This predates many of the more famous animal and plant geoglyphs created by the later Nazca culture. It is attributed to the late Paracas culture, who utilized these monumental earthworks.

The Nazca Lines Cat is located on a steep slope in the Nazca Desert of southern Peru. It sits specifically near the Mirador Natural, a viewing tower built alongside the Pan-American Highway. This location allows it to be partially visible from the ground, unlike many other geoglyphs that strictly require an aerial view.

Feline figures were highly symbolic deities in ancient Peruvian cultures, often representing power and the spirit world. The precise construction of the cat geoglyph demonstrates advanced topographical understanding and ceremonial devotion by the early Nazca or Paracas peoples. Creating such a massive figure on a steep slope required careful planning to ensure it remained proportionately accurate.
