Nectaris Basin

description Nectaris Basin Overview

The Mare Nectaris Basin is an ancient impact basin on the near side of the Moon that was formed when a massive asteroid struck the lunar surface. The impact event serves as the geological marker for the beginning of the Nectarian period, which occurred approximately 3.92 billion years ago. Over time, basaltic lava flooded the interior of the basin to form Mare Nectaris, a dark, flat volcanic plain. The surviving rim of the original basin is visible today as the Rupes Altai mountain range and the Montes Pyrenaeus.

insights Ranking position

Nectaris Basin ranks #48 of 165 in the Crater ranking, behind Clearwater Lake West, ahead of Odessa.

help Nectaris Basin FAQ

Is the Nectaris Basin the same thing as Mare Nectaris?

No. The Nectaris Basin is the much larger impact structure, while Mare Nectaris is the dark basaltic plain that later flooded part of its interior. The visible mare therefore covers only a portion of the original basin.

Why is the Nectaris Basin important to lunar geology?

Its formation defines the beginning of the Nectarian Period in the Moon's geological timeline. The impact occurred roughly 3.9 billion years ago, during the era when enormous basins were reshaping the lunar surface.

What lunar features mark the edge of the Nectaris Basin?

The basin is surrounded by rings and heavily modified highlands, with prominent nearby craters including Theophilus, Cyrillus, and Catharina. Rupes Altai forms a striking escarpment associated with the basin's outer structure.

Can the Nectaris Basin be seen from Earth with a small telescope?

Yes. Mare Nectaris appears as a compact dark patch on the Moon's southeastern near side, and low sunlight can reveal Rupes Altai and nearby crater chains. The full basin is harder to recognize because later impacts and lava flows have obscured its rings.
