Nessos Amphora

The vase is famously named after the painting on its neck, which depicts the Greek hero Heracles battling the centaur Nessos. This violent scene was painted to represent the mythological conflict where Heracles defeated the half-man, half-horse creature.

Created in Athens around 620 to 610 BCE, the amphora marks a crucial transition from the older Proto-Attic style to the classic black-figure technique. It represents one of the earliest and finest examples of this new method of vase painting.

The ancient vessel is prominently displayed at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in Greece. It remains a vital piece of evidence for historians studying the evolution of ancient Greek pottery.

The vase is attributed to an anonymous artist known by the notional name the "Nessos Painter." This early artist is credited with helping to establish the black-figure painting style that would dominate Athenian pottery for the next century.
