Newton Johnson Wines

The estate sits in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley of South Africa's Walker Bay district, near the coastal town of Hermanus, roughly 100 km southeast of Cape Town. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is divided into three wards, and Newton Johnson's vineyards are in the Upper ward at higher elevation.

Newton Johnson is especially recognized for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which thrive in the cool maritime climate of Walker Bay. They also produce Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, but the family's reputation has been built primarily on their Pinot Noir from Upper Hemel-en-Aarde vineyards.

The valley's proximity to the cold Atlantic Ocean provides strong maritime cooling, allowing slow ripening that preserves acidity and delicate aromatics in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The three wards—Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge—sit at progressively higher elevations with varied clay-rich Bokkeveld Shale soils.

The estate is family-run by the Newton Johnson family, with father Dave Newton Johnson and son Bevan Newton Johnson involved in winemaking. The family established their vineyards and cellar in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in the late 1990s.
