NGC 6309 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Ophiuchus, commonly known as the Box Nebula because its bright central region has a roughly rectangular appearance. It is a bipolar object with an intricate arrangement of shells and extended features, including ansae, or handle-like structures, along its axis. The nebula is the glowing gas expelled by a dying star and illuminated by the hot stellar remnant at its center.
