Ningaloo Maskray

The Ningaloo maskray is a cartilaginous fish found exclusively in the shallow waters of Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef. It is strictly endemic to this specific marine environment.

The Ningaloo maskray is notable for its relatively recent discovery by marine biologists. It was officially described as a distinct species in the late 2000s following genetic analysis of maskrays in the region.

It is differentiated from other members of its genus, like the bluespotted maskray, by its distinct genetic makeup and specific coloration patterns. Its limited geographic isolation on the Ningaloo Reef also sets it apart from similar Indo-Pacific species.

Like other stingrays, the Ningaloo maskray possesses venomous barbs on its tail used for self-defense. However, it is generally non-aggressive and poses little threat to humans unless directly stepped on or harassed.
