Southern Stingray

The most famous location to swim with wild Southern Stingrays is Stingray City, located in the shallow waters of Grand Cayman. Since the 1980s, wild rays have been provisioned and fed by humans there, creating a massive tourist attraction. Visitors can stand in the waist-deep water and interact with the rays directly.

Southern Stingrays are benthic feeders that primarily eat small crustaceans, mollusks, and tiny fish found on the ocean floor. They use their wing-like fins to stir up the sand and uncover hidden prey. Their powerful dental plates are perfectly designed for crushing the hard shells of crabs and clams.

The scientific name for the Southern Stingray is *Hypanus americanus*. They are native to the western Atlantic Ocean and are particularly abundant in the Caribbean Sea. For many years, they were classified under the genus *Dasyatis* before being reclassified by taxonomists.

While Southern Stingrays do possess a venomous barb on their tail, they are generally docile and not considered aggressive toward humans. They typically only sting in self-defense if they are accidentally stepped on or physically threatened. The famous incident involving Steve Irwin in 2006 involved a different, much larger species: the short-tail stingray.
