description Longtail Stingray Overview

The longtail stingray (Hypanus longus) is a large, benthic stingray native to coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean, ranging from southern California to Peru. It belongs to the family Dasyatidae and is most easily recognized by its exceptionally elongated, whip-like tail, which can measure more than twice the width of its body disc. Like other stingrays, it possesses venomous spines at the base of its tail, which are used for defense against predators such as sharks.
