Noguchi Coffee Table

The Noguchi coffee table was designed by Japanese-American artist and sculptor Isamu Noguchi in 1944, with a later release by Herman Miller in 1947. The table was essentially a piece of fine art repurposed into functional, high-end furniture. It was heavily inspired by Noguchi's earlier biomorphic sculptures.

The classic Noguchi coffee table measures 50 inches long, 36 inches wide, and stands 15.75 inches tall. The glass tabletop is a massive 3/4-inch thick piece of heavy, clear plate glass. These specific dimensions were chosen by Isamu Noguchi to perfectly balance the interlocking base and the organic curve of the top.

The easiest way to authenticate an official Herman Miller Noguchi table is by looking for Isamu Noguchi's signature and the Herman Miller logo permanently etched into the glass tabletop. Additionally, the two identical wooden base pieces should interlock seamlessly without requiring external hardware or screws to stay together. The base should also rest perfectly flat on the floor without wobbling.

The base of the Noguchi table is available in several high-quality wood finishes, including black ash, walnut, white ash, and natural cherry. Herman Miller uses real wood veneer over a solid wood core to construct the interlocking base pieces. Natural cherry is unique because it slowly darkens and develops a richer patina as it ages.
