Nelson Bubble Lamp

The Nelson Bubble Lamp was designed by American industrial designer George Nelson in 1952. The lamps were originally produced by Howard Miller and later shifted to Modernica, who remains the official manufacturer today. Nelson reportedly got the inspiration for the lamp after seeing a hanging silk Swedish lamp.

George Nelson developed a unique manufacturing process where a translucent plastic polymer is sprayed over a steel wire skeleton. This creates the distinctive, self-supporting "bubble" membrane that beautifully diffuses the light. Modern versions by Modernica still use this original 1950s spraying technique to maintain the exact look and durability.

The Bubble Lamp collection includes several distinct shapes and sizes, such as the Saucer, Cigar, Ball, Criss-Cross, and Lantern. The Saucer Bubble Lamp, one of the most popular models, is available in sizes ranging from roughly 12.5 inches to 19.5 inches wide. This allows the lamps to be used as small accent lights or large primary room fixtures.

The lamp itself is incredibly lightweight, typically weighing under 10 pounds depending on the size and the cord length. However, because it is suspended from a ceiling cord, it is not designed to bear any external weight. The steel wire frame is rigid enough to protect the plastic membrane from impacts, but you should never use it to support other objects.
