Mount Ontake (Ontake-san) is an active stratovolcano located on the border of Nagano and Gifu prefectures in central Japan, with a summit elevation of 3,067 meters (10,062 ft). The volcano is considered sacred in the Shinto religion and has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries, with several shrines located along its trails. On September 27, 2014, Ontake erupted without sufficient warning, killing 63 people in what became Japan's deadliest volcanic disaster since World War II. The mountain features multiple crater lakes and remains monitored closely by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
