Pieter Willem Botha, commonly known as PW Botha, was a South African National Party politician who served as prime minister from 1978 to 1984 and as the country's first executive state president from 1984 to 1989. His government introduced limited constitutional reforms, including the 1983 creation of a tricameral parliament, but retained apartheid and excluded the black majority from national representation. It also used states of emergency and security measures against opposition before Botha resigned in 1989.
