Pedro Castillo is a Peruvian politician, former rural schoolteacher, and former trade-union leader who won the 2021 presidential election as the candidate of the left-wing Peru Libre party. He served as president from 28 July 2021 until 7 December 2022. On that date, he announced plans to dissolve Congress and rule by decree, but the move failed; Congress removed him from office and he was arrested, after which Vice President Dina Boluarte assumed the presidency.
