Palancar Reef

The Palancar Reef is a highly celebrated coral formation located off the southwestern coast of Cozumel, an island in the Mexican Caribbean. It is part of the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park.

The site is globally recognized for its dramatic underwater walls and towering coral pinnacles that rise from the ocean floor. The complex structure creates incredible swim-throughs, tunnels, and caves for divers to explore.

Palancar Reef was heavily popularized by the legendary French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau in the 1960s. His documentary films brought global attention to the incredible clarity and marine diversity of the Cozumel waters.

The reef system features varying depths, with shallow sections starting around 30 feet and dramatic walls that drop off into the abyss, well beyond recreational diving limits of 130 feet. This makes it suitable for both intermediate and advanced divers.
