Paul Ekman is an American psychologist known for research on emotion, facial expression, and nonverbal behavior. Cross-cultural studies conducted with colleagues, including work involving the Fore people of Papua New Guinea, supported the view that several basic emotional expressions are recognized across markedly different cultures. He also helped develop the Facial Action Coding System, which classifies visible facial movements by their underlying muscle actions.
