LeDoux later cautioned that these circuits explain threat detection and survival responses, not the entire conscious experience of fear.

His conditioning studies helped map pathways by which sensory information reaches the amygdala and supports learned defensive reactions. The work showed that damage to key amygdala circuits can disrupt conditioned responses to previously neutral cues.

LeDoux argues that defensive circuits can control bodily and behavioral reactions without themselves creating the conscious feeling of fear. Conscious fear instead involves broader cognitive systems that interpret the situation and the organism's internal state.

The Emotional Brain presents his early account of emotion and threat circuitry for a broad audience. Anxious and The Deep History of Ourselves develop later distinctions among survival circuits, cognition, and conscious experience.
