Pegtymel Petroglyphs

The Pegtymel Petroglyphs are a collection of ancient rock carvings located along the Pegtymel River in the Chukotka region of far eastern Russia. This remote site sits incredibly close to the Arctic Circle in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

The rock carvings primarily feature Neolithic engravings of reindeer, hunting scenes, and human figures. Some of the human figures are uniquely depicted with large, rounded heads, which has fascinated archaeologists for decades.

This site is highly notable because it is recognized as the northernmost rock art location in all of Asia. The engravings provide crucial anthropological insight into the ancient cultures that managed to survive in brutal Arctic conditions.
