The Penobscot River is a major waterway in Maine, flowing approximately 175 kilometers from its headwaters to the Atlantic Ocean at Penobscot Bay. The river's basin is the largest in the state and historically served as a vital transportation route for the timber and logging industries. It remains the cultural and territorial center for the Penobscot Nation, whose reservation is located on Indian Island in the river near Old Town. Today, the river is also recognized for its ecological restoration efforts, including major dam removal projects.
