Peter Lauer

Peter Lauer is a contemporary winemaker based in Germany’s Saar region, an area known for its steep slate slopes. The Saar is a sub-region of the larger Mosel wine-growing area, celebrated for producing distinctly racy, high-acidity Rieslings.

Lauer specializes in crafting distinct dry Riesling wines exclusively from grapes grown on his estate vineyards, notably the Ayler Kupp. The steep, blue slate soils of the Ayler Kupp impart a strong, focused minerality to his wines.

Rather than strictly adhering to the traditional German Prädikat system, Lauer often uses a gastronomy-focused classification system based on the taste profile of the wine. He numbers his bottles with designations like 'Fass 3' or 'Fass 18' to indicate varying levels of sweetness and terroir.

Peter Lauer's meticulous, minimalist approach was heavily influenced by legendary Saar winemaker Egon Müller. He adopts traditional practices, such as using large, old oak casks and natural yeasts, to bottle each vintage under its original, unmanipulated profile.
