Pfalzgrafenstein Castle

description Pfalzgrafenstein Castle Overview

Pfalzgrafenstein Castle is a fortified toll station on Falkenau island in the Rhine near Kaub, Germany. King Louis IV began its construction in the 14th century to help collect river tolls, and later rulers expanded its defenses. Its elongated masonry walls and projecting tower give it a ship-like outline, while its island position allowed officials to work with nearby Gutenfels Castle and barriers across the river to control passing traffic.

insights Ranking position

Pfalzgrafenstein Castle ranks #289 of 346 in the Castle ranking, behind Helmsley Castle, ahead of Kilchurn Castle.
