description Plain-breasted Piculet Overview

The Plain-breasted Piculet (Picumnus castelnau) is a small woodpecker in the piculet subfamily of the family Picidae. It occupies floodplain forest along the Ucayali and Amazon rivers in eastern Peru, southeastern Colombia, and far-western Brazil, with records associated with Cecropia-dominated habitats. Its plain, largely unmarked underparts distinguish it from related piculets with barred breasts, and the scientific name commemorates the French naturalist Francis de Laporte de Castelnau.
