description Pole Vault Overview
The pole vault is an athletic track and field event in which competitors use a long, flexible pole to launch themselves over a horizontal crossbar. After sprinting down a runway, the vaulter plants the pole into a metal box, using the resulting spring momentum to invert their body and clear the bar before falling onto a cushioned landing mat. Modern vaulters typically use poles constructed from fiberglass or carbon fiber due to their superior strength-to-weight ratios and flexibility. It has been a continuous medal event for men in the modern Olympic Games since 1896 and for women since 2000.
