Pseudaptenodytes macraei

description Pseudaptenodytes macraei Overview

Pseudaptenodytes macraei is an extinct penguin known from a partial left humerus found near Minhamite in Victoria, Australia. The bone comes from the Goodwood Formation, whose age is placed in the late Miocene to early Pliocene, and its shape resembles the humerus of living Aptenodytes penguins such as the king penguin. The available material is limited, so the species is used mainly in studies of the late Neogene penguin record and cannot be treated as a direct ancestor of modern penguins.
