description Archaeospheniscus lopdelli Overview

Archaeospheniscus lopdelli is an extinct penguin species from the Late Oligocene of New Zealand, known from the Kokoamu Greensand Formation at Duntroon in Otago. Fossil material, including the holotype held by the Otago Museum, indicates a bird about 90 to 120 centimeters tall, somewhat smaller than a modern emperor penguin but large compared with many living penguins.
