The puna is a high-elevation grassland and shrubland region of the central Andes, extending across parts of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Generally situated above the treeline, it combines intense solar radiation, cold nights, strong winds, low atmospheric oxygen, and pronounced seasonal variation in moisture. Vegetation includes tussock grasses, cushion plants, shrubs, and wetlands known as bofedales, while native animals include vicuñas, Andean foxes, flamingos, and several specialized rodents.
