Purari Delta

The Purari Delta is located in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea, where the Purari River empties into the Gulf of Papua on the country's southern coast. The Purari is one of Papua New Guinea's largest rivers by discharge volume.

The Purari Delta is notable for its sparse human settlement, despite its large size. The vast swampy landscape and dense mangrove forests make permanent habitation difficult, though some indigenous communities live along the waterways.

The Purari Delta contains extensive mangrove ecosystems and tropical wetlands that serve as important nurseries for fish and crustaceans in the Gulf of Papua. These swamp forests represent one of the largest relatively intact mangrove and wetland complexes in the broader Pacific region.

Both the Purari and the Fly are major rivers of Papua New Guinea with large coastal deltas in the Gulf of Papua region. The Fly River delta is larger and better known due to environmental concerns related to the Ok Tedi Mine, while the Purari flows through more remote and less industrialized terrain.
