description Pygmy Sperm Whale Overview
The pygmy sperm whale, Kogia breviceps, is a small toothed whale found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate seas worldwide. It reaches about 3.5 metres and is difficult to observe because it spends little time at the surface, usually avoids vessels, and can resemble the related dwarf sperm whale. A shark-like head, a pale mark behind the eye known as a false gill, and the ability to release a dark intestinal fluid when threatened distinguish it from many other small cetaceans.
