The southern bottlenose whale, Hyperoodon planifrons, is a beaked whale in the family Ziphiidae and the southern counterpart of the northern bottlenose whale. It has a circumpolar range in the Southern Ocean, spending much of its time in deep water and approaching Antarctic ice during the warmer season. Adults can reach about 8 metres; the species has a short beak, a bulbous forehead, a small sickle-shaped dorsal fin, and one pair of lower-jaw teeth in males.
