Rainbow Loom

The standard Rainbow Loom kit is generally recommended for children ages 8 and up due to the fine motor skills required for looping the tiny rubber bands. However, younger kids can easily participate by using a simplified version like the Monster Tail loom or just their fingers to make basic fishtail bracelets. Adult supervision is also recommended to prevent the small bands from becoming a choking hazard.

While you can use generic refill bands, the official Rainbow Loom brand bands are generally higher quality and more durable. Many generic brands use cheaper silicone that snaps easily or has an unpleasant odor. Sticking with name-brand bands, or high-quality refills, ensures your bracelets won't break easily after wearing them.

Aside from the standard friendship bracelets, you can use the loom to create complex charms, animals, and colorful necklaces. Advanced loomers often make 3D figures like mini-animals or popular video game characters. There are thousands of YouTube tutorials demonstrating how to make everything from rings to small action figures.

The Rainbow Loom was invented by Cheong Choon Ng, a former Nissan engineer, who created the plastic pegboard prototype in his basement. He patented the design after failing to make rubber band bracelets alongside his daughters. It went on to win the Toy Industry Association's Toy of the Year award in 2014.
